Carnival! - Abandon your job, get the fancy dress on and party! Processions, music, dancing in the streets, the roadside stalls called chiringitos, sell deliciously tempting snacks and of course there’s plenty to drink. The favourite local beer is Dorada which is brewed on the island, or for one with an extra kick ask for the Dorada Especial; you will soon cast off your inhibitions and be dancing with the local population - the rhythm of the drums is infectious and it’s impossible not to move with it. It helps to wear a costume which can be bought in many shops at this time of year - let your hair down and discover a new liberated you! Events are organised such as the fancy dress balls, parades, the traditional vintage car rally and the unusual race known as "Mascarita ponte el tacón" which is run over cobbled streets by men in masks wearing very high heels. On Ash Wednesday there is the strangely bizarre "entierro de la sardina" or Burial of the Sardine. This is a larger than life replica of a sardine which is pulled along on a float followed by the “weeping widows” who are in fact men dressed as widows wailing inconsolably as they follow the procession - like many of the parades it has to be seen to be believed! Once the procession reaches the end of its course the sardine is ritually burned which causes even more wailing from “the widows”. Here is a selection of the activities in Puerto de la Cruz, this year the theme is “Homage to Tourism”.
