The Starmus Festival – from June 20th to 25th

This five day long festival is designed tell the public about the fascinating subject of astronomy and related sciences. Science, arts and music are combined in a wonderful programme to make this a very special event. There are conferences (three Nobel Prize laureates will take the podium) exhibitions and a concert, “Tangerine Dream”, featuring the guitarist Brian May from Queen on June 24th at 20.00 in Costa Adeje is in the south of the island. From Puerto de la Cruz you can catch the bus to Adeje. You could combine a day on the beach at Las Americas or Los Christianos, which are close to Adeje, with a visit to the Festival Starmus. Fiesta de San Juan – on June 23rd in Puerto de la Cruz

On the night of June 23rd the people of Puerto de la Cruz celebrate midsummer’s night on the “Playa Jardín” beach. You can write your wish list for the following year on a piece of paper, wrap it round a stone and throw it into the fire. Maybe your wish will come true!? At midnight everybody goes for a swim to cleanse the soul for another year.
Annual washing of the goats. On the morning of June 24th, to keep up an old tradition, the goatherds bring their animals down from the hills and wash them in the sea in the old port. It is certainly and interesting and amusing spectacle to watch.

 

 

Corpus Christi – on June 30th in La Orotava

La Orotava is situated in the north of Tenerife in the beautiful Orotava valley. You can get there by bus from Puerto de la Cruz, it’s just a 10 minute journey. You can visit this picturesque little town after your Spanish classes at the FU International Academy have finished.
A visit is particualrly worhtwhile on the feast of Corpus Christi, which this yeartakes place on June 30th. The streets are decked with flower carpets, alfombras, and the square in front of the Town Hall is covered with a massive multi-coloured sand carpet which has taken 6 weeks to prepare, the designs are based on religious themes. The volcanis snd ceom from the montainour regiosn around Mount Teide. The procession on the day of Corpus Christi is the town‘s biggest event of the year, the roads leading up to the Town Hall are decorated with the floral carpets which the priest and his reintue walk over. The huge sand carpet is trodden over by the processions and the childern in the town take delight in finishing its destruction, it is then swept clean for another year. Mountain biking in Tenerife – discover the island by bike
