Feast day of the Virgin of Candelaria – August 15th

On August 15th the local people make a pilgrimage to Candelaria to pay tribute to the “Virgen de Candelaria“. Many pilgrims make their way there the night before, traditionally on foot from across the island. As with most fiestas in Tenerife it is a colourful spectacle with music, dancing and culinary delights. A trip to Candelaria is not only worthwhile on this day. It is a charming town right by the Atlantic Ocean and has much to offer visitors. In the square in front of the large church there are some impressive, larger-than-life statues of the former Guanche kings, the original inhabitants of Tenerife. They are called “Menceys”.

Last Romeria (pilgrimage fiesta) of the year, the Romería of the Holy Roque – August 16th

In Garachico - In the chapel “La Ermita de San Roque“ you can see, the statue of the Holy Roque, the patron saint of Garachico. Garachico is a small village to the west of Puerto de la Cruz. The chapel was built in the 17th century. Once a year the inhabitants of Garachico celebrate the saint‘s day of San Roque with a Romeria, or pilgrimage. In the year 1606 Tenerife was hit by the bubonic plague, the black death, so the inhabitants of Garachico built the little chapel in honour of San Roque who they believed saved them from 5 years of pestilence. From Puerto de la Cruz, where the FU International Academy is situated, there is a regular bus connection to Garachico. It takes about half an hour to get there.
