On foot paths you can discover the whole beauty of the island. Tenerife is an island of extraordinary variety offering spectacular hiking terrain for all levels of expertise.
Northern Tenerife is a walkers' paradise. Every walker who visits the north of the island is overwhelmed by its beauty - there are spectacular views of ridges and coast and fantastic rock formations. The contrast of the volcanic lunar landscape to the magnificence of the luxurious woods is awesome. Furthermore, the grandeur of the Masca Gorge makes it an attraction in its own right (reported to us by many experienced Gorge walkers as being "Almost, if not the best in the world".
Tenerife has four main walking areas:
Teide National Park
"The nearest you will come to walking on the moon." Walk around at 7,000 feet. Expect to be overawed by the spectacle; size, shape and color of the rocks.
Mt.Teide overlooks the whole island of Tenerife and has the highest peak in Spain. Teide National Park gives visitors the rare chance to experience the diversity of the island’s natural landscape. The extreme altitude and temperatures in this area of the island make for plant and animal life that is completely unique to the island. Visitors can also go see Teide’s gigantic volcanic crater by hiking or taking a cable car up the mountain. From the top you get the privileged view of the islands of Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, which is truly a matchless sight. Tours to the top of Teide, staying over night in a hut in the mountains are possible after registration by the Spanish authorities in Santa Cruz.
Orotava Valley
The Orotava Valley is the most beautiful region of Tenerife. The area that stretches from the very slopes of the great volcano to the coastline sculpted into suggestive forms with its seafaring flavour, offers visitors all the friendliness and charm of its villages and a surprising heritage of beautiful landscapes and monuments. A beautiful alpine forest area with superb views from 4,000 feet down to the coast. You will follow the pilgrim trail or wander pleasantly along hidden paths.
Anaga mountains
The Anaga Mountains constitute an extensive protected area of high ecological value. These beautiful mountains boast a wide botanical wealth, with one of the most representative samples within the entire archipelago. Be prepared for surprise. Expect stunning views. Walk along quiet paths, decked with flowers like the Canarian Bell which hides its beauty in shade and under leaves. Bird lovers might see the splended kestrel or the tiny pippet.
Teno mountains
One of the most fascinating and botanically most interesting areas of the Teno mountains is doubtless the Masca gorge Barranco de Masca. The slopes are covered with tabaiba and opuntia, there are steep ascends and descends, gigant basalt rocks, vast pebble and a small brook accumulating at some points to little 'ponds'.
Guided tours are being offered by all tour operators. If you want it a little more thrilling and not just for tourists you can ask us for local guides.
With Patea Tus Montes - Senderismo y Aventura S.L. for example, you will not only discover the most beautiful regions of the island, but also practise your Spanish, as their target group are young canarian people.
Gaiatours - Trekking and excursions
Gaiatours was formed in 1994 to show visitors the natural beauty of Tenerife through the organisation of walks led by professional guides. All the routes have been tried and tested and you can feel confident that you will be in good hands: trekking, gastronomic and cultural tours are undertaken throughout the year. Gaiatours supply the necessary transport: e.g. coaches and boats where necessary.
