The medical care in Tenerife is comparable to European standards and there are numerous German medical specialists in Puerto de la Cruz. Before you start your trip you should obtain a European Health Insurance Card which you can get at your local Social Security office - with this you can receive treatment from the Canarian Health Service. However, we strongly recommend you take out comprehensive private travel insurance, including medial cover, for the duration of your stay. The local pharmacies carry all standard medication and are easily recognised by their green cross. Out of regular business hours there is an emergency pharmacy open in every town - farmacia de guadia - the address is always on a notice outside every pharmacy. There are no tropical diseases on the Canary Islands but you should prevent the risk of sun burn by using a good quality, high factor sun block and prevent dehydration by taking water with you when you go out on hot days.
